Lil and Little Explorers are excited to host our first Great Nurdle Hunt.
Come along to Yellowcraig Beach on Wednesday 12 September 10am and learn about plastic pellet nurdles, how they get into our seas, how to find them and be part of our citizen science via www.nurdlehunt.org.uk.
Suitable for all ages. Meet in the playground at 10am.
Yellowcraig is buggy friendly (for a beach) and has toilet facilities, including baby changing. Parking is £2. Any late arrivals can find us at the beach by the main path.
As part of our focus this June on reducing waste, we are super excited to have our friends at Lil Thing popping up at Steampunk on 15th June. As well as offering lots of cool items for fuelling a zero waste lifestyle, they will be sharing useful ideas, info and enthusiasm about sustainable living. At 2pm we will walk along to the Lodge Grounds for a litter pick, returning to Steampunk to share lemonade, coffee and treats. Come along and join us for a fun, sociable and socially responsible day.
We are really looking forward to seeing you all at the beach tomorrow. It is often cooler there than inland so take an extra layer. Shoes for exploring the rocky shore are a wise precaution against slips. The forecast is for sunshine (yay!) so sunscreen, hats and a water bottle at the ready. We'll meet in the playpark from 2pm and set off for the beach around 2.15pm. Catch us up if you come later (down to beach turn left).
During the afternoon you can hear from Janet Khan, Senior Scientist with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency about seaweeds, why they are important and even which ones you could eat!
The UK is home to a particularly high diversity of species, and is a special place for seaweeds. Unfortunately, seaweeds are not as popular as flowers, butterflies or birds, so fewer people make and submit observations of them so we'll complete a survey for the Big Seaweed Search too. ( More info herehttp://www.nhm.ac.uk/…/citizen-scie…/big-seaweed-search.html ) Come along and put your citizen scientist hat on for the afternoon!
