Are you ready to have some pun this Halloween?!

Do you love the spooky season? Do you love puns? If you have answered yes to both, you have found yourself in the right place!

I personally looove a dress up (& a pun) and it comes to good use on Halloween! Every year me and my friends gather to play games, eat far too many sweets and most importantly compete to win the best costume!

The only thing I find scarier than losing the costume competition is the impact Halloween costumes have on the planet. In 2019 Hubbub reported that 7 million Halloween costumes are thrown out each year in the UK alone. This is very environmentally damaging as 69% of all Halloween costumes are made of polyester (Hubbub, 2025), which can take between 20-200 years to decompose (Stanes, Gibson, 2017). While these polyester costumes decompose, they release harmful chemicals into the air, the soil and groundwater (The Sustainable Fashion Forum, 2024) causing long-term environmental harm.

Yikes! So, to save landfill waste this year, here are some tutorials on punny costumes that can be made from items in your wardrobe or found second-hand!

If you need a place to find second-hand costumes, try Lil’s Halloween costume swap group: (I promise you, it’s great :D) or the Lil Revolving Wardrobe (there’s ‘normal’ clothes there to!) - find out more here

  1. Devilled egg

This can be done discreetly or, you can go all out! Either way - it’s an *eggscelent* costume!

You will need:

- Devil themed clothes and accessories (I wore old devil horns, a red top and some black trousers).

- Eggs drawn on a piece of paper (as many as you feel is necessary for people to get the yolk!)

- Safety pins to secure the eggs to your outfit.

2. bOO-tea

The *ghoul* of this costume is to make people laugh with your cheeky word play!

You will need:

- Ghost themed clothes (I wore white jeans and a white top, but you can also use some old sheets for extra spookiness!)

- Ghost eyes drawn on two tea bags (I found circular tea bags worked best for this) and a ghost mouth drawn on paper!

- Some tea bags you don’t mind securing on to the outfit as decoration.

- Something to secure the ghost eyes, mouth and tea bags onto your outfit (we used a running stitch so it would be easy to undo and get my top back unscathed!)

- A box of tea to carry around with you (also handy if someone wants a spontaneous brew!)

- Ghost makeup! I wrote ‘Boo’ and drew a ghost on my face with eyeliner!

3. Luigi Vuitton

A combination of fashion and mario kart; let’s-a-go!

You will need:

- Brown dungarees, a brown hat and a black belt.

- Something reminiscent of Louis Vuitton (I bought this scarf off depop for £10 and have kept it in my closet to wear with everyday outfits!)

- Yellow paper or felt to cut out two coins and two ‘Louis Vuitton’ logos.

- Brown paper or felt to cut a circle for a 'Louis Vuitton logo’’.

- Printed or drawn emblems from mario kart to put on the dungarees (e.g., I chose the star and the shell!)

- Black gloves.

- Glue to secure the logo onto the brown circle.

- Safety pins to attach the accessories to your outfit (see the pic below for placement!)

4. Party Animal!

This costume gets a few *hoots* of laughter and I ain’t *lion*!

You will need:

- A party outfit and party accessories (I wore a dress, heels and a bow-tie).

- Some animal accessories (I borrowed cat ears from my friend and drew on some cat whiskers!)

5. Old Fart

Going out with a bang for our final costume…!

You will need:

- Clothes that remind you of a granny/grandad!

- Old hair (You can use white flour to make your hair grey!)

- Any granny/grandad accessories you can think of (e.g., glasses and drawn on wrinkles - sorry granny!)

- A whoopie cushion (I found this costume secondhand on depop. If you want a more usable option, you could carry an actual whoopie cushion, a fart machine, or draw a cartoon fart and pin it on to your outfit!)

*Bonus points if you blow a raspberry when your friends sit on you!!*

Let me know what you’re going as this year in the comments below, or, tell me which one of these costumes was your favourite!

All the best,

Niamh Xx
